1. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean the paved areas in your garden. If you are doing this with the children you can make a game of it and see who sweeps up the biggest pile of dirt or leaves.

2. Check taps or water equipment for signs of leaks and repair as quickly as you can. One drop a second leaking from a tap can be as much as 5000 litres a year. Use a trigger on the end of your hose so that the water is never left running onto the ground.

3. Sloping gardens and features will allow the water to run off more quickly than flat areas. You might get soil washed off that is vital for your garden as well as valuable water. Also any chemicals or fertiliser that you have applied in the garden could end up in local streams and rivers and cause pollution.

4. A crowded garden will use more water and may also be more prone to disease.

5. Choose a grass mix for the lawn that needs less water especially if you live in an area with low natural rainfall. Lawns are the most water-hungry feature in a garden.

9. If you need to water your garden, then choose the right time of day. Don't water in the heat of the day because the water will simply evaporate. The best time is the early morning. Don't water on windy days because this will be less effective.

Drip irrigation is a method where water is supplied to the roots of the plant directly. To implement this in a whole farm one needs to use pipes, tubes, valves, tubing and the emitters. The trick here is to use as little water as possible. This method of farming is very effective in dry and semi dry areas.

You can also mix fertilizers with the water to maximize the input. This system if properly implemented it works better and provides better results than the flood irrigation or the over head irrigation. It also conserves a lot of water.

In drip irrigation, the main problem is clogging in pipes and drainage facilities. Proper drainage and filtering should be maintained for the system to be overall effective. The advantage is there is no deep percolation or evaporation thus maximum use of the water available.

This system is very effective as you are assured of a maximum use of the resources available. If well implemented the results are amazing. The initial layering out is a bit complex but once the system is layered down and working right, its easy to maintain.

Watering your tomato plants adequately is essential for their healthy growth and for the development of juicy, rich fruits. However, home gardeners often make the mistake of watering too little or too much. Here are some tips that can help you avoid these watering mistakes and give you the harvest that is your neighbor's envy.

You can use your finger to test out if the soil is too dry. Just stick your finger about one inch deep into the soil and if it feels dry, it is probably time to add some water. Remember, tomatoes love moisture and a moist soil will help you get a thriving and productive plant.

Watering thoroughly about once or twice a week is a much better than watering it lightly every day. Thorough watering will help in the development of an extensive deep root system that will reach deep into the soil to seek water and nutrients which prevents it from staying on the surface. When the roots reach deep into the soil, they are able to hold dry spells better and do much better during the hot summer afternoons.

A thing to consider while watering is the soil in which the tomato seedlings have been planted. If the soil is sandy, you will need to soak it every 4-5 days, on the other hand if the soil is heavy, you should soak it every 7-10 days.

You should also consider the weather. If it is too hot, then you may have to water it every 2-3 days. If the weather is cooler, you may just need to water it once a week. And if it is raining, your plants are already getting too much water, so you can afford to cut back on watering them yourself.

Avoid over watering since it can do more harm than good. The roots of the plant need air to grow and protect them from various diseases, so make sure the soil is not too soggy.

Watering early in the day is the best way to prevent evaporation losses and it also keeps your plant hydrated for when the sun comes out. Midday is the time when evaporation losses are the highest, and therefore, watering during this part of the day should be avoided. Evening time is also not a good time since it will keep the foliage wet and makes the plant prone to blights and diseases.

A great way to reduce evaporation losses is to use mulch. It not only helps retain the moisture, but also spreads the water evenly and improves the uptake of the moisture by the plants. When it is raining continuously or heavily, mulch also helps in reducing diseases caused due to excess water.

To make sure the water is delivered right to the soil surface and not on the leaves, furrow irrigation, drip irrigation or soaker hoses work best. Watering the leaves does not deliver the water straight to the roots and may also invite diseases to the plant.

Remember, uneven or improper watering can cause blossom end rot, stunt the growth of the plant, reduce the quality of the fruits produced, and make the plant susceptible to pests and diseases. So, water thoroughly but do not over water and you will be assured of a tomato harvest that will really make your neighbors envious.

Prayer Garden

The Mission Prayer Garden Baja, In the desert during a period of drought.I don't remember when I started this garden possibly 2006. It was originaly an expirmental orchard, and remains in part to this day,thanks to John Moore of California. I just thought that it would be great to have a beautiful place with lots of color where one could go to think and or pray. After getting permission from the Board of Directors I proceeded. So along with a few others, we designed the layout , and installed the water pipes and route system. We used drip and micro sprinkler system, My goal was to have the most beautiful garden in the Baja Mexico desert. Many People have worked in the garden even to this day, continuing to improve and maintain.Blessings to all who participated and continue.

It almost goes without saying that most roof gardens are hot, sunny, very dry places. I can't imagine why anyone with a roof garden, container garden, or any other type of small garden in full sun would not want to install a drip irrigation system, especially since plants will need to be watered daily and sometimes even twice a day in the middle of summer. If, for example, you came home late just once and forgot to water the plants that day, you could find easily yourself with a collection of very dead plants the next day.

Installing a drip irrigation system will help protect the investment (financially and emotionally) you have in your plants by taking the time and guesswork out of watering by hand. Drip irrigation is the process of delivering precise amounts of water and nutrients directly to the plant's root zone, drop by drop. This system provides us with exact watering control and efficient use of limited water resources. Other water sprinkler systems do not use water as efficiently.

Drip irrigating first began in Israel, where dry desert conditions and a limited water supply created the need for an environmentally-friendly watering system to grow crops. Later, the process spread to the U.S., where it proved crucial in the dry, desert southwest or in landscape areas where traditional sprinklers have not proven effective, such as rooftop gardens, container gardens, and other small urban garden areas.

Farmers have been using drip systems since the 1960s, when they first discovered they could actually increase yields while lowering water use.

WHY DRIP MAKES SENSE

- Doesn't waste water because water goes directly to the roots and can be set on a timer to the exact amount needed

- The slow, regular, and uniform application of water produces robust, consistent plant growth

Most systems are set to run on a timer that turns the system on and off. To gauge the correct watering frequency, you will want to observe how long it takes for the top inch of soil to dry out and set the timer to come on at intervals that will allow this slight drying to occure between each watering cycle. For most sunny gardens, you would probably set the timer to come on once a day in summer and every other day in spring and fall except during rainy periods when it can be shut off

SYSTEM MAINTENANCE

Initial Adjustments - The first time you run the system, experiment with durations between 15-30 minutes per cycle to see how long it takes for water to come out the drainage holes on all containers. The goal is to completely saturate the roots of every plant in the system. A good rule of thumb would be to time how long it takes for water to come out the drainage holes of the largest plant in the coverage area and set your timer for that length of time.

Seasonal Variations - Adjust watering frequency to account for seasonal temperature fluctuations. Turn system off when it rains or get a rain sensor that will shut the system off automatically for you.

Winterizing - Remove the stopper or crimp from the end of the line and flush out the tubing with plain water first. Then, drain system of all water and disengage from faucet. Bring timer in.

Spring Start-Up - Re-attach timer, replace batteries, stop up the end of the line too allow pressure to build in your line and start again as you did at initial set-up.
